Inadequate hydration leads to a vast array of problems and complications contriibuting to falls and infections to name just two.
Under severe circumstances someone may be unable to use a cup of any type. Trying to use a cup in these circumstances presents an increased risk of choking.
The one way drinking straw has a simple non-return valve at the base of the straw. This means once the fluid reaches the top of the straw it doesn't go down again. This takes away most of the physical effort and enables the user to take sips under their own control.
The valve can be removed, washed and re-used and although the straw is rigid, when softened in hot water, it can be carefully curved to a shape to make it easier to usein a reclined position.
The straw works perfectly with the mug and the valve is larger than the hole in the cap and therefore can't drop out.
